Greek vase

This month we have been analysing ancient Greek vases from the Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology here at the University of Reading. These miniature vases were used in votive offerings to the gods, with small amounts of wine or oil placed inside. The particular vases we examined came from Sparta and dated from around 500 BCE. Kutsi Akcicek, an undergraduate from Imperial College, is investigating different methods of chemical analysis, in order to establish the kinds of clay and glaze used in the pots. The project is supervised by Professor Amy Smith, and the analysis was performed by Peter Harris. Shown above is an X-ray spectrum from one of the pots, indicating its elemental composition, with a photo of the pot superimposed.
