Surveying and construction courses

Our courses are accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). This means you can be confident that your degree is professionally relevant and of a high quality.

These courses share a common first two years, where you'll develop a comprehensive understanding of the principles that underpin construction management and surveying. At the end of your second year, you can choose to continue on your existing degree or switch to another of our undergraduate surveying and construction courses.

BSc (Hons) Building Surveying

You'll analyse building performance and material lifecycles to establish the cause and effect of building defects. This course is designed to prepare you for a successful career in building surveying.

BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying

Learn about the mechanisms that determine the cost and price of construction, and how to complete projects on budget and on time. You'll develop specialist knowledge of construction economics and contract law.

BSc (Hons) Construction Management

Build the technical knowledge and practical skills you need to manage construction operations. You’ll have the opportunity to explore subjects such as green innovation and historic built environments.

Architectural engineering courses

Shape a more sustainable future for our built environment. With a focus on sustainable energy and environmental engineering, an architectural engineering degree from Reading provides you with skills and knowledge in high demand for a career in a fast-growing sector.

We offer architectural engineering as a BEng and a MEng degree. On both courses you'll study integrated approaches in the design, management and operation of resource-efficient buildings in an urban context.

BEng (Hons) Architectural Engineering

This course will equip you with in-depth knowledge of energy systems and environmental engineering, and skills in architectural and building design.

Areas of study include: design and management of building environmental systems and urban energy systems; structural analysis and build pathology; construction site engineering; architectural design; and digital technologies with a focus on numerical modelling and programming.

MEng (Hons) Architectural Engineering

This integrated master's degree provides an opportunity for more advanced study, enabling you to deliver engineering solutions to solve problems in the built environment and address the challenges of a net zero future.

You'll develop a thorough understanding of renewable energy technologies, urban microclimates, and energy management, and taking a holistic approach to design.

Gain the required entry qualifications with an International Foundation Year

If you want to study surveying and construction or architectural engineering at a British university, but don't have the correct qualifications, we offer an International Foundation Year option with each of our undergraduate courses.

The foundation year is designed to equip you with the subject-specific and general study skills needed to cope with the demands of undergraduate study.

Optional modules

In the third year of your degree you are able to choose optional research-led modules. This enables you to customise the course to meet your needs and interests.

Placement year options

All of our undergraduate degrees offer the opportunity to transfer onto a course that includes a one-year paid industry placement just before your final year.

Although our courses don't include a "Year in Industry" on UCAS, we'll work with you when you arrive at university to see whether a placement year could benefit your individual aspirations. We'll then support you to seek out appropriate opportunities.

We also encourage you to seek out summer placement opportunities.

I started researching universities and it was the University of Reading that stood out. The umbrella course for both construction management and quantity surveying gave great flexibility to specialise in one subject in my final year. I wanted to gain experience in both specialisms before I chose.
