My time with a Thrive mentor
The following is from a second year student's account of his experience of working with his Thrive mentor, Charlie Leech, who works at The Telegraph.
Work experience as a Thrive mentee
From the beginning of the mentoring scheme, I was offered several different work experience activities. First, I volunteered at the Telegraph's Bike and Outdoor Show at the Excel Centre in London, which Charlie managed to get me into straight away. During the event, I got the chance to meet a Telegraph journalist who gave me great advice on my CV. Later, Charlie also invited me to the Telegraph offices in London and organised a few different activities for me to do there. I was given a tour on the office and got to meet a number of influential people within the newspaper. I even got to do some work on the sub-editing desk, where I was given a live task!
What have I gained from the experience?
With Charlie's help, my CV is polished and I now know how to write a great cover letter; she has empowered me to put myself out there in situations where previously I would have felt way out of my comfort zone. Charlie also kindly helped me find, apply for and secure a placement at the football blog Three and In, where I can put her advice into practice. I am very grateful for Charlie's mentorship, and I am looking forward to continuing my work with her!
