1 in 6 young people will experience a mental health problem before they turn 18. Depression is common and serious, and if left untreated it can lead to self harm and suicide. At this event we discussed how the University of Reading is helping to combat this teenage mental health crisis using evidence based treatments, specifically designed for young people, and funded by University supporters.
During the event, we shared how the University's teenage mental health projects have had a profound impact on both a local and a national scale, including an update from Charlie Waller Chair in Evidence Based Psychology, Professor Stella Chan, on the successful introduction of Brief Behavioural Activation treatment to schools and clinics in the UK and Scotland.
Professor Chan also discussed the development of the Sleeping Better programme which is helping to identify the link between depression and sleep. At the end of the event, Professor Chan was joined by colleagues Dr Ray Percy, a clinic psychologist at the AnDy clinic specialising in adolescent depression, and Dr Hannah Vickery, Director of Training at the Charlie Waller Institute, for a Q&A segment.
