The donor's family moved to Tunnel Farm in 1880 from the Barnstable area of Co. Devon, where they had held about 320 acres either as owner-occupiers or as tenants. They were induced to move by the collapse of tin prices and by the attraction of cheap land. A strong evangelical tradition in the family led them to found local churches, which presumably absorbed considerable surplus capital
