- The donor's family settled in the Stour Valley co. Essex in the middle of the 18th century and occupied Great Yeldham Hall in about 1832. Gunces farm was taken over between 1838 and 1839, The donor's father returned to farming in about 1919 and occupied farms at Orsett, East Horndon and Wallasea Island, co. Essex before moving to Codham Hall in 1938. J.Wentworth Day, in Farming adventures (1943) devotes part of a chapter to this family, which he considers was of typical yeoman stock.
