h-FLAP, Reading

Reading is developing h-FLAP, an electronic resource based on the FLAP paper text resource developed during 1992-96.  The coverage includes physics and its associated mathematics from entry A-Level to the end of the first year of a university physics degree course. h-FLAP will be a hyper-linked multimedia product with strategic links within modules, between modules and the hyper-Glossary and, through the Glossary, to other modules.  It is designed for screen use and has a range of educational features to optimise it for this purpose.  It uses Adobe Acrobat pdf files that are screen friendly.  Navigation is achieved without scrolling.  It embeds all relevant tables, figures and equations alongside each element of text.  The resource will also be made multimedia, with audio, video and computer simulations to aid learning.

As an application of the resource a Foundation Programme will be designed for face-to-face or distance delivery.  This may be used for intending physicists or engineers and may be used in self-study as 'resource only' or in conjunction with institutional support, assessment and accreditation.  A student attaining a credit in the programme will be qualified to proceed into a degree course in physics or engineering.

The PPLATO interface will be designed at Reading.  This will allow users to access all parts of the PPLATO resource, as produced by the Partner sites, and allow teachers to construct a course plan to their own design, using PPLATO and any other resources of their choice.

A development version demo of h-FLAP is available for viewing, please note that only  maths modules M1.1 to M1.3 and physics modules P2.1 and P2.6 are available.  Selecting other modules will result in an error.  sample h-FLAP is available here.  If you have problems you can also download the full sample [6.55 mb Zip].
