Community of design

The Department of Typography & Graphic Communication is a community of design where the endeavour of learning is shared by all. The Department provides intersections of all kinds that bring students and staff together in pursuit of excellence.

Our learning spaces are stimulating, supportive and open. They welcome you to develop as a designer, working collaboratively with peers and staff.

The integrated arrangement of the Department gives you both a base for your own year group and opportunities to cross paths with students in others years, including our postgraduates. The arrangement encourages you to mix easily with other students, exchange ideas and share knowledge – creating a diverse and dynamic community.

Facilities and exhibition space

Our studios have just what you need: lots of space, lots of light, printers close by and wifi throughout. Staff offices are adjacent, so advice, encouragement and help are never far away.

The Department has a printing workshop for letterpress, lithography, and engraving, and a Reading Room with an wide range of specialist design books, journals and type specimens that complement the outstanding design holdings in our main library and special collections. Our exhibition space regularly features inspiring design work from Department and University collections, and hosts travelling exhibitions, too.

Our aim is to blend academic and practical ways of working to create a vibrant study environment.

"The department has a great atmosphere. It's packed from top to bottom with examples of lettering and graphic design and has a quirky charm that I absolutely love. The staff are all very approachable and know you by name, and because each year group is quite small I'm good friends with all my classmates. Getting on well with my fellow students makes working in the department really enjoyable, and it's always useful to have someone there to bounce ideas off."
