Preparing you for life after graduation

Enhance your career opportunities by developing practical and transferable skills, and by linking into a network of design professionals.

We believe in getting you ready for success by making employment preparation a key part of our course. Throughout the course you will acquire many skills and abilities that employers are seeking. Our close relationships with leading companies and agencies provide valuable professional contacts that can take you into your chosen area of work.

"The broad range of experience students get at Reading, and exposure to real jobs, is well suited to the work we do at Addison Group and equips graduates to start their careers with an open mind and the right skills, attitude and motivation to get to grips with the working environment. At Reading there is a real appreciation for typography as a tool to communicate effectively that you don't always see. I was also impressed with the digital knowledge our Reading graduates had gained and the project work they produced as a result. "

John Anderson

Creative Director, Addison Group

Preparing for a career

Preparing for a career happens throughout the undergraduate course, as you discover different areas of design that interest you, as you learn about the professional experiences of working designers and previous graduates, and as you complete ‘Real Jobs’ in our professional practice scheme. We also offer an intensive one-day Careers Workshop at the end of the second year of study. The workshop is an opportunity to think hard about your career and the career paths that are available and best suited to your aims. There are many helpful elements to the workshop, such as preparing your CV and online portfolio, taking part in mock interviews with design professionals, and receiving lots of feedback that will get you ready for starting your career.

Achieve the career you want

"Studying at Reading allowed me to build a set of truly specialist skills which really stood out to employers. During the three years, I created a unique and well-rounded portfolio which opened up so many doors - one of them being the BBC Trainee Scheme!

Working at the BBC has broadened my horizons even further, and having those strong design foundations from the course gave me a great starting point to keep on learning throughout my career."

Access to an alumni network of design professionals

Even before graduating, we introduce you to an extensive alumni network of successful design professionals. After graduating, this network can provide you with valuable opportunities to make connections, open doors, and progress your career.

Our network of around 1000 graduates from our BA and MA programmes is spread right across the design industry, but with a focus on areas that require a mastery of typography. Every year, graduates from previous years return to recruit new designers from the graduating class. These connections build and strengthen each year, reinforcing our reputation, and yours.
