Design & Print Studio

The Design & Print Studio (DPS) shares a building with the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication. It provides a comprehensive in-house design and print service for every part of the University of Reading, designing and producing brochures, logos, leaflets, posters, postcards, books, journals, stationery, adverts and display stands.

In-house design and production teams have expertise in delivering professional solutions that add real value to teaching and learning, promotional, research and marketing publications - keeping University money on campus.

Real Jobs

The graphic design service that DPS provides is integrated with undergraduate study in the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication, and helps to provide a unique learning environment for Typography students. DPS arranges industry visits to commercial printers, and staff give lectures and seminars - sharing their knowledge of printing methods and design expertise. As part of the BA course, students design projects for clients from within the University and from the local area. DPS manages the production of these 'Real Jobs'.

Students are supervised through these real jobs by members of academic staff - who are also practicing designers - working closely with DPS. Many of the jobs which students design are printed in house, giving them the opportunity to see every stage of the production process from pre-press to proofing and printing.

For clients with a limited budget and a keen interest in working alongside undergraduates, this is an excellent way to get first-rate design. Instead of a design fee, we ask for a small donation that goes to a special fund for students that helps with course expenses. Students develop their real-world skills, and clients get access to up-and-coming design talent.

If you are a client interested in working with students, e-mail Rob Banham (the Real Jobs co-ordinator) r.e.banham@reading.ac.uk or telephone him on +44 (0)118 378 6399.
