Staff Profile:Professor Sue Walker

Professor Sue Walker
Job Title:

I am Director of the AHRC-funded Design Star Doctoral Training Centre, based at Reading, working with colleagues at Brighton, Goldsmiths, Loughborough and the Open University.

As Director of Collections and Archives in Typography, I oversee and encourage the use of collections and archives in teaching and research. I teach undergraduate and postgraduate students in design practice and lecture on the theory and history of typography and graphic communication.

I supervise doctoral students in subjects relating to the history and theory of typography and graphic communication, including Isotype, children's books, and the graphic aspects of language. I welcome enquiries from students keen to work with the University's collections and archives as part of their PhD project.

Areas of Interest:

My research interests include analysis and description of graphic language, in particular the relationship between prescription and practice in everyday documents, typographic design for children and information design in public service.

I was co-investigator, with Eric Kindel, on the AHRC-funded Isotype Revisited project based on the Otto and Marie Neurath Isotype Collection held in Typography. I continue to pursue research on Marie Neurath's role and influence as a transformer.

Much of my recent work has been through the Centre for Information Design Research, which I helped to establish. I am currently working on projects that relate information design from the past to current issues in health and communication.

I am a co-editor of the book Information Design: research and practice published in 2017 and I am working on a number of projects related to the EU COST project, 'E-read: evolution of reading in the age of digitization.'
