Is sponsoring an EngD for me?

Why should I research with University of Reading?

The University of Reading is a vibrant campus based in the Thames Valley, it is one of the top 20 most research-intensive universities in the UK and the excellence of the teaching has been confirmed by the QAA. It is also one of only 29 British Universities which are ranked in the top 200 universities of the world.

What is the focus of the TSBE Centre?

The Technologies for Sustainable Built Environments (TSBE) Centre is an Industrial Doctorate Centre for training Research Engineers to Engineering Doctorate (EngD) qualifications in the areas of sustainable built environments and energy management.

What is an EngD?

This is the flag-ship qualification of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). It is targeted at leading students that are aiming to be leaders in industry. The four year programme qualifies the Research Engineer (RE) for an Engineering Doctorate equivalent to a PhD. The RE will spend 70% of time based at your company, also attending modules held at the University for the first two years. All the time spent on the EngD programme is fully recognised by Institutions towards CEng status.

What will it cost?

The TSBE Centre will contribute around £80k over the four year programme to your research project. Typically industry sponsors contribute £40k (£10k each year), but this innovative research could get you relief on your corporation tax, reducing your outlay.

What do I get to show for my involvement?

You and your company will get to work with leading academics from across the many disciplines within the University. Together you will push boundaries and discover new knowledge. If your company wants to join others like AECOM, Morgan Sindall and Scottish Southern Electric, to be at the forefront of innovation and lead the way to meeting environmental challenges, this programme is for you.

How do I decide on a Research Project?

Bring your ideas along to us for discussion. If you need inspiration a portfolio of research ideas and themes has been put together by our academic team.

After the 2010 TSBE Centre EngD Conference Gavin Walker Director of the Built Environment at Peter Brett Associates said 'The University of Reading TSBE Centre really does stand out as a model for industrial/academic cooperation and information transfer'.

Rise to the challenge of the built environment, today!
