Project

The main aim of this research project was to analyse and verify weather District Heating (DH) network designed and built according to new concept of Low Temperature DH. This can supply the required space heating (SH) and domestic hot water (DHW) to low energy houses and do it in more efficient way than the DH system designed in traditional/conventional way for UK climate.

The four main objectives of the project: First to understand in detail the domestic heat demand in low energy homes and its impact on operation of a district heating network. Based on the measured data develop simplified models/profiles for Space Heating and DHW that can be used for modelling of heat demand in other low energy homes. The second objective was to measure and analyse what are the heat losses of the Low Temperature DH network and return temperatures as designed and built and compare it with DH heat losses of other networks (e.g. in Denmark, Sweden). The third objective was to model three cases of the DH network in Slough (1st as currently designed for 55°C, 2nd designed for traditional temperature of 75°C, 3rd optimised pipe sizes for 55°C) and calculate DH network heat losses. The fourth objective was to study to what level of thermal comfort people were satisfied with SH and DHW and how it can be improved in future designs of DH and domestic HVAC system for low energy houses.
