Thesis

 Developing a method to assess demand management opportunities from small to medium-sized enterprises.

Project

Collectively small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are significant energy users although many use little energy individually. Carbon reduction is often not a priority but smart grids may create a new opportunity. A smart grid will give electricity suppliers a picture of real-time energy flows, bringing the opportunity for consumers to receive price incentives for engaging in demand side management. Smart grids may ease the challenge of matching electricity supply and demand as the proportion of renewable electricity increases and existing coal and nuclear power stations close. Managing electricity consumption from smaller users will become more important as more renewable electricity is generated. As well as incentivising local carbon reduction, engaging SMEs with smart grids has potential for contributing to wider grid decarbonisation.

Modelling of buildings, business activities and technology solutions is needed to identify opportunities for carbon reduction. This research created a software model of SME energy use, looking particularly at the potential to shift electrical loads away from peak times. Measurements from a small number of SMEs were be used to validate part of this model.
