Study support
We will offer you comprehensive support throughout your study period at the University of Reading.
The Erasmus & Study Abroad team are a focal point for guidancem although we work closely with colleagues throughout the university in order to support your studies.
Study abroad students are provided with access to a member of the academic staff within each school / department (known as a study abroad coordinator) who will help you to settle at the University of Reading and make the most of your time here. They will be able to advise and support you throughout your studies and will help you with any academic or personal difficulties that may affect your progress.
We also organise dedicated study skills sessions specifically for study abroad students to help acclimatise to studying in the UK, (including study methods, referencing, academic culture) in order to help students achieve their potential whilst studying with us. Our Study Skills Advisers are also on hand to offer support and guidance throughout your academic studies, who can provide individual consultations where appropriate.
The purpose built Student Services building (Carrington building) provides an additional focal point for student support on campus, including a new Helpdesk facility for all general student enquiries.
Study skills support
Study abroad students will have access to a whole range of materials and resources in order to support your study and to help you adapt to studying in the UK. You can gain academic advice, practise oral presentations, finish your course assignment, find out how you can better prepare for exams, improve your essay-writing skills at S@iL - Student Access to Independent Learning.
There is also a comprehensive online resource called SOAR offering guidance to the huge range of skills development opportunities, which will provide you with easy to access information related to the key transferable skills for both study and for future careers.
Language support
If English is not your first language it is possible to select the IWLP English module, aimed at enhancing your ability to work and study in an English speaking environment (valued at 10 ECTS).
Furthermore the In-sessional English Support Programme (IESP) can help you. The programme offers:
- Academic Writing Skills classes
- Speaking Skills classes
- Listening Skills classes
- Sessions in Language Laboratories
- Writing Advisory Service
- Tutorials Advisory Sessions
Registration takes place during the first week of term and all study abroad students are eligible to participate. (Please note that the IESP classes are not credit bearing and study abroad students will have to pay to attend).
