cashpointThere is a branch of Lloyds TSB on the Whiteknights campus, complete with cash machines that can be used with cards from most UK banks.  There is also a branch of NatWest a couple of minutes walk as well as a branch of HSBC approximately ten minutes walk away from the Whiteknights campus.

Most other banks and building societies have branches within the City Centre.

Banks tend to be open Monday to Friday, 09.30 to 15.30, whilst some stay open until 17.30. A few open for some services on Saturday morning. Cash machines are widely available.

Opening a Bank Account

To open an account you will require a letter from the University, a letter addressed to your local residence and a letter stating your home address.

You will not be able to open a bank account until you have registered at the University. You should make sure that you have access to enough money to cover the first month at University as it can take up to three weeks for an account to be opened.

Speak with your bank in your home country before you leave. Ask their advice about running a bank account in the UK. Find out what methods of transferring money are available, including the security of each method and the costs involved. Ask if your home country bank has a special relationship with a bank in the UK and whether this can help with setting up an account or in any other way. Also find out if you can use a cash card from your home country bank in UK bank machines, to take money out of your account in your home country.
