Undergraduate courses
The School of Systems Engineering offers a wide range of degrees within our disciplines of:
Single-subject degrees exist in each of these areas, together with joint degrees between these subjects and some with other Schools. Almost all degrees are accredited by the relevant professional bodies, and this was reaffirmed following the accreditation visit in 2008, and hence help to meet the requirements for professional status such as Chartered Engineer.
These degrees lead to a BSc, a BEng or an MEng qualification. BSc and BEng degrees are basically three year 'bachelor' degrees which meet some of the educational requirements for Chartered status the remaining requirements can be met by a suitable 'matching' section, such as an MSc degree.
MEng degrees, which last an extra year, are integrated undergraduate-masters degrees which meet all of the educational requirements for Chartered status. These provide more depth and breadth, including more current research.
Many degrees have a variant whose name includes the word 'Applied' these are like the standard bachelor or masters degree but have an extra year where the student spends a year working in industry, gaining valuable experience (and money). For those degrees without such a variant, we do have a mechanism to create an applied variant for students who request it.
If you don't have the appropriate qualifications for direct entry to our undergraduate degrees, the Science Faculty's Science Foundation Year could be the answer. Here you choose a set of modules appropriate to the degree you are interested in, and if you complete the Foundation Year successfully you enter directly into Part 1 of the appropriate Systems Engineering undergraduate degree.
