Foundation degrees

GraduatesOur foundation degrees are exciting, new, higher education technical qualifications for those working, or intending to work, in the engineering or IT professions. You study part-time at one of our associative colleges and your employment and experience can be taken into consideration as part of your learning.

Foundation degrees were introduced to provide graduates needed within the labour market to address shortages in particular skills. They also contribute to widening participation and lifelong learning by encouraging participation by learners who may not previously have considered studying for a higher level qualification.

Given the rapid changes in technology, jobs will change. As such employees need self-confidence, independence, flexibility and adaptability. Foundation degrees help provide lifelong learning skills to give you these qualities.

A foundation degree awarded by the University of Reading will increase your career opportunities and your earning potential and you will have the new Foundation Degrees in Science (FdSc)qualification after your name.

The University of Reading has two part-time Foundation Degrees associated with the School of Systems Engineering:

In addition, the School offers a 'top-up' whereby those students who pass the Foundation year with an average of at least 60%, can turn that Foundation Degree into a normal BSc Information and Communication Technology here students attend the University for one day a week over a two year period, though it can also be taken full time over one year.
