Postgraduate research

RobotsResearch is key to the activities of the School of Systems Engineering – our academics are internationally renowned workers in their respective fields (we achieved a grade 5 in the most recent UK Research Assessment Exercise) and keen to advance their knowledge and expertise. Often their research is then incorporated in the teaching.

Systems Engineering is a broad subject, and our staff undertake research in various areas, as reflected in the School's six research groups. Postgraduate students can study for a PhD (typically 3 years full time) or an MPhil (typically 2 years full time), and will be supervised by an expert in your chosen field which in turn will reflect on one or more of the research groups. Please see our research opportunities page to find out more on the research groups and how to apply to do a PhD degree.

In addition the school has extensive links with industry, primarily though not exclusively through Knowledge Transfer Projects (formerly Teaching Company Schemes). Here typically researchers are employed on a specific project usually at a company but with industrial and academic supervision. The work done here can often form the basis of a MSc, MPhil or even PhD. Please see the how we work with industry section for more details.
