About us

A welcome from the Head of School

Network cablesWelcome to the University of Reading, School of Systems Engineering. Our School, with its unique mix of skills in Information Technology, Computer Science, Cybernetics, Electronic Engineering, Embedded Systems, Robotics, Communications, Feedback and Control, grounded in firm scientific and engineering principles, is well placed to both develop and exploit the emerging technologies that will play a key role in wealth creation and in defining the way society both works, and plays, well into this new Millennium.

The School was formed in 1998 following recognition by the University of the significant opportunities available both in teaching and research from a greater degree of integration between the related disciplines of Computer Science and Informatics, Cybernetics,  Electronic Engineering and increasingly, the development of novel technology involves interdisciplinary links between once disparate subjects and new innovative ways of combining established disciplines. Although the School was formed relatively recently, its main subjects are well established having been part of the University of Reading for over 40 years.

RobotsWe offer a wide range of undergraduate degree courses, including single subject Computer Science, Cybernetics, Electronic Engineering and Information Technology, joint degrees in these areas, Robotics and Systems Engineering, as well as courses with other subjects, such as Information Technology and Business and Computational Science. Many of our courses share a common first year, allowing a wide choice of final degree subject, once your knowledge and interests are firmly established. Our graduates are readily employable and enjoy an enviable reputation with local industry. Our location in the heart of the UK Silicon Valley provides excellent employment opportunities.

Our research groups maintain international levels of activity at the leading edges of their fields and provide opportunities for training of researchers via research assistant posts and postgraduate (PhD) studentships. The School also runs MSc programmes which combine teaching of state-of-the-art subject matter with an opportunity to engage in stimulating and industrially relevant research. We are host to a research centre of excellence in  Advanced Computing and Emerging Technology (ACET) and, as part of our links with business, the University Knowledge Transfer Partnerships.

Please look at this site to find out more about the variety of high quality undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses you can study, our international recognised research and our work with industry.
