About Electronic Engineering

Welcome to Electronic Engineering, part of the School of Systems Engineering at the University of Reading.

Since the discovery of Electricity by the ancient Greeks in 600 BC, our success in harnessing its power has been incredible. Can you imagine, for instance, arriving home one dark winter's night to find that there's no heating or light? Have you thought about how the quality of your everyday life would be affected without telephones. TVs or computers?

We are now so dependent upon electronic systems that, without them, our lives would be unimaginable. In business, computer systems underpin nearly all transactions. In the home, audio systems, PCs and most domestic appliances are controlled by electronics. In manufacturing, in transport, and in medicine, electronic engineers play a vital role. At the forefront of invention, design and construction of all of these systems, electronics enhances every aspect of our lives.
