Software
We have developed various software resources that we use in our training and consultancy work. The following can be downloaded:
-
Instat, a general statistical computing package
-
SSC-Stat, an "add-in" to strengthen the capabilities of the spreadsheet package Excel
- Diversity, an Excel "add-in" that provides functions for calculating diversity indices
Statistical Games
A set of statistical games have also been developed at Reading. These are simulation exercises based on real life problems that have been adapted at Reading for educational purposes.

R (Statistical Software)
R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. R is very frequently used world wide, in part as a result of being free, and consequently there is a lot of information and help available on the web. We provide here some links that we have found useful:
-
R Nabble forum - A web forum for R, has an excelling search function, so someone may well have answered your problem in the past
-
The Cran R guides - These are basically the official guides to R. They are great tools, especially this introduction, but they can be rather like the online help in being a little less accessable than would be ideal.
-
UCLA's Resources to help you learn and use R - Has some basic lessons/tutorials on beginning with R, and heading towards more advanced R users.
-
R graphical manual - A great tool for inspiration and explanation of R graphics
-
The R graph gallery - Brilliant for ideas for data visualisation
-
RTips - Useful top sheet for R, but perhps a little less user-friendly than the tutorials
