Statistical Analysis

The data are now analysed. The initial step in the analysis is often an exploration of the data, which includes searching for oddities, continuing the attention to ensure data are accurate and valid. To this end and continuing our series of video demonstrations on the use of CS-Pro, we have included a couple of videos here; the first shows how to create frequency tables in CS-Pro while the second demonstrates how to export data ready to read into a statistics package for analysis. Frequency tables are useful to produce at this stage both as a means of checking for anomalies and in order to get an initial feel for the data.

The data are then processed to answer the objectives of the activity. When researchers are skilled at using suitable software the initial analysis is often a quick procedure. The main story in the data can often be seen easily. A delay is often because the objectives were not complete or were not clearly specified. Other common reasons for a delay in this stage are lack of confidence by the researchers in the appropriate methods of analysis, or poor organisation of the data from the previous stage. The publications we have included here include general statistical guidelines; information on various statistical techniques; the analysis of survey data and the analysis of experimental data.
