What is SSC-Stat?

SSC-Stat is an add-in for Microsoft Excel.  Many people start with their data in Excel, so it is logical to build on that and add some features often needed for statistical analysis.

SSC-Stat is designed to strengthen those areas where the spreadsheet package is already strong, principally in the areas of data management, graphics and descriptive statistics. The idea was initially conceived as the result of comments from participants attending our course Microsoft Excel for Statistics? What you can and cannot do.

We are keen to encourage people to look at their data in a way that recognises the structure in the data. SSC-Stat enables graphs (etc.) to be easily generated for datasets in which there are columns indicating different groups.  Menu features within SSC-Stat can:

  • help users to manipulate their data (stacking and unstacking columns, generating factors etc.)
  • support the provision of good graphs, formulating graphs that can be edited in the same way as any MS Excel graph
  • produce boxplots

You can inspect the online Help pages to see more about what SSC-Stat does.

SSC-Stat is currently only available for Windows and has been tested with Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. Due to incompatibilities with 32-bit and 64-bit software, it will only run properly with 32-bit versions of MS Excel. Mac users who wish to use SSC-Stat can either install windows using Apple’s BootCamp, or using virtualisation software such as VirtualBox or Parallels Desktop.
