About the SSC
The Statistical Services Centre is a not-for-profit consultancy and training unit set up in 1983. We provide training and consultancy in statistics and data management. We take pride in delivering high quality services and paying attention to our clients' needs both in terms of level of expertise used to solve the problem and clarity of explanation provided.
A major strength of the SSC lies in the composition of our team. The SSC currently employs eleven statisticians and data management experts, and two administrative staff. Acting as a team, we are able to offer clients a broad range of statistical and computing skills, different areas of specialisation and up-to-date knowledge on a variety of statistical methods.
As well as having our own staff, we work closely with our academic colleagues in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, in which the SSC sits, and can draw on their specialist knowledge if a situation requires it.
Statistical interests in the SSC cover a wide spectrum from the teaching of statistics in a non-technical way to the application of some highly specialised methods, such as multi-level modelling or generalised estimating equations. Computing expertise is equally broad and varied - amongst us we have expertise in a range of statistical software, and this allows us to offer clients experience in relevant software packages.
The SSC has a proven track record of international work and is involved
in and committed to the better use of statistics for decision making,
allieviating poverty, improving food security and assessing climate change.
We are also interested in the integration of research methodologies in
order to take advantage of the synergy that comes from the combination
of 'qualitative' and 'quantitative' approaches.
While the SSC is part of the life of the University of Reading, we are
not affected by the rhythm of academic life and provide a service to our
clients all year round, regardless of term dates.
All our activities are run on a self-financing basis. Our staff are paid entirely out of income generated by the services we provide.
Our aims and interests
Our main objective is the promotion of good statistical practice among experienced and inexperienced users of statistics, and, where appropriate, to progress modern statistical methods from theoretical discussions to practical situations.
We are always interested in working collaboratively with clients, to either enhance their statistical skills or support existing skills that are already available in-house.
