About our on-site courses
We offer ready-made and bespoke courses for different audiences, from inexperienced users of statistics to experienced statisticians. Our aim is to provide the skills needed to deal with data, with an emphasis on the practical application of statistics.
During our courses we encourage participants to discuss their statistical problems with us. Our consultancy services give access to further post-course support when necessary.
Commissioned and Bespoke Courses
If several members of your organisation have a common training requirement, we can provide a commissioned course (or set of courses) to address your needs. Commissioned courses can be run either at our training centre at the University, or on the client's premises. See our information on tailored training, or contact us for more details.
Ready-made Courses for Scientists and Technologists
Do you find yourself dealing with data on a fairly regular or infrequent basis and are unsure how best to proceed? We offer a range of courses designed to furnish you with a good level of statistical competence and data management skills.
- Courses are presented as a mixture of lectures, demonstrations and practical sessions. Classes are of limited size, and we encourage interaction between participants and presenters. Mathematics, as far as possible, is kept to a minimum so that participants can concentrate on understanding concepts and how to interpret results.
- The computer-based practicals reinforce the ideas and methods that are taught in the lectures. Most courses offer a range of software for practical sessions - currently the packages include GenStat, Minitab, SAS, SPSS and Stata. This allows participants to select a software package that is most relevant to their needs, or with which they are already familiar, so that they can concentrate on the statistics. Instat, a package developed by the SSC, may be chosen for some courses. It is provided free for individual use by course participants on and after the course.

Ready-made Courses for Applied Statisticians
A number of our courses provide up-to-date coverage of statistics topics at the standard of current-day MSc level. As well as providing suitable development training for recent graduates, the courses are appropriate for updating the skills of statisticians who graduated less recently, and of experienced users of statistics who have developed their expertise over a number of years but do not have a statistical qualification.
- We aim to furnish participants with both an understanding of methodology and the skills necessary to deal with particular problems. Courses are therefore a mixture of lectures and practical sessions. The computer-based practicals use reliable statistical software, to reinforce the ideas and methods taught in the lectures.
- Courses on offer cover both established and modern methods. They concentrate on techniques and tools that applied statisticians might need in their day-to-day work.
- Statisticians who find themselves giving advice to clients, rather than having full responsibility for all statistical aspects of a client's project, may also find our Courses for Scientists and Technologists of interest.
Discounts
Discounts are available to participants attending consecutive courses, and to academics and others in education. See the individual course descriptions for further information.
