Undergraduate courses

The Greeks called politics 'the master science' in recognition of its breadth and importance. Through studying Politics & International Relations at Reading, you will apply the resources of a vibrant discipline to some of the most pressing problems of the contemporary world. You will explore the ideas, theories and values that shape policy, learn what motivates political behaviour, and examine how institutions of government and their political processes work at domestic and international levels.

Undergraduate students in the libraryYour choice of course: The first year modules provide a self-contained introduction to the study of Politics and International Relations. These form part of a flexible overall degree structure which enables you to sample the subject before committing yourself to a degree. If you wish to continue in this field of study, you can choose between the single subject courses in Politics & International Relations or in War, Peace and International Relations, and many combined subject courses, in which Politics or International Relations is studied along with a subject from another department. International Relations and Economics, and Politics and Economics are the two combined subject courses offered in this School.

Both the single and combined degrees offer many optional modules enabling you to match your degree with your particular interests. There are also opportunities to spend part of the second year at an American or European university.
