Research
The School of Politics and International Relations is an ambitious research community that welcomes colleagues, visitors, and students from every area of the discipline. Our lectures, research seminars, workshops, and conferences explore a wide variety of features of the internal practices, external relations, theoretical underpinnings, and practical security needs of the modern liberal state. At present, we have particular strengths in strategic studies, political theory (including the challenges posed by climate change), European studies, and the history of political thought, but we are pleased to consider applications from anyone with a serious commitment to understanding modern politics.
Besides a number of informal groupings, the School's activities include:
- The Centre for Political Theory
- The Centre for Strategic Studies
- Liberal Way of War Programme
- Research Seminar Series
- Carnegie Project on the Political Economy of Post Conflict Statebuilding
- General Dynamics Seminar Series
- Forum for Studies on War
The department also has two inter-connected research themes around which staff teaching and research interests converge:
