Why study with us?
Taught by world-leading scholars in their fields, our master's courses reflect the particular strength of our research expertise in the areas of international relations, strategic and security studies, and public policy.
We offer wide range of master's degrees that enable you to either develop a broad understanding of the field or specialise in a certain area. Whichever degree you choose, there are a number of benefits to doing within the Department of Politics and International Relations at Reading.
Engage with visiting fellows and practitioners
Our staff work on cutting-edge research, and many have invaluable experience working as advisers to government bodies, the military and international organisations. Our relationships with practitioners in the public sector and academics in research institutes and universities means we often welcome guest speakers who contribute to our policy-relevant teaching.

To ensure this policy-oriented approach, we have also recruited Visting Fellows to help lead some of our modules. These retired practitioners have held top positions in the British civil service, diplomatic corps and military, and bring a wealth of experience and insight to your learning.
Degrees designed with small-group teaching at their core
Small-group teaching is at the core of all our master's courses, giving you the chance to work closely with the Department's leading experts. Many of our courses have an interdisciplinary element, building on close links with colleagues in History, Economics, Development, and other areas.
A great selection of optional modules to choose from
We offer a wide range of optional modules across all of our master's degrees. This gives you the flexibility to study a number of topics or specialise in a specific area.
Research methods training
You can choose to undertake modules in research methods training. These modules train you in qualitative and quantitative research methods, and are incredibly useful if you wish to eventually pursue a PhD or a career with a core focus on research.
