Areas of interest

My research focuses on questions about how to respond to the way in which politics often fails to live up to our expectations.

We might be disappointed, for example, that we continue to disagree bitterly over what we ought to do together politically, and so cannot achieve consensus. How then should we think about who, if anyone, is to blame for that disagreement, and what any of us ought to do about it?

Some of these issues have developed in a narrowly methodological way, in recent debates around ideal and non-ideal theory, and what's been called realism. I also have interests in more directly practical issues, in particular around the value of equality, protest and resistance and political authority, and responsibility for injustice.

Postgraduate supervision

I am happy to supervise students in most areas of political theory. Please contact me if you are interested in supervision, whether at undergraduate, masters or doctoral level.

Background

I joined the Department in 2015 from the University of Leicester, where I'd been for two years. Before that, I held a variety of teaching and research positions at University College London, and before that, I studied for my doctorate in political theory at the University of Oxford, which I finished in 2009. I'd like to think that despite this long history of academic institutionalisation, I am mostly fairly normal.

  • DPhil, Oxford
  • MPhil Political Theory, Oxford
  • BA (Hons) PPE, Oxford

Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at UCL and then Leicester between 2011 and 2014.
