World flagsThe Graduate Institute of Political and International Studies (GIPIS) at the University of Reading was established as the Graduate School of European and International Studies (GSEIS) in the mid 1960s, one of the leading multi-disciplinary centres of teaching and research in European and International Studies in the UK.

In total five departments contribute to the teaching and research programme of GIPIS. In Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) rated the Institute and Department 'Excellent' in its nationwide assessment of teaching and learning in education.

GIPIS has always had a very strong intake of international students attracting at least 50% of students from outside of the UK. The Institute's teaching and research covers important aspects of: European political and economic integration and culture, diplomacy, international politics, international law, globalisation strategy and defence, security and terrorism, arms control and no-proliferation, trade, international political economy, development, Russia and the former Soviet space, the politics of the Middle East, political theory and public ethics.
