    Developing synergies with like-minded institutions

Our Partnerships

The School of Politics, Economics and International Relations is dedicated to developing long-lasting and sustainable partnerships with prestigious universities and institutions around the world.

Our partnerships help to enhance the scope of educational and career paths available to our students and  support increased global engagement and collaboration to share ideas and learning opportunities.

Moscow State University of International Relations (MGIMO) logo

MGIMO is a prestigious Russian University, specialising in international relations, regional studies, and international law and is famous for producing political, economic and civic professionals. As part of the University's Strategic Partnership with MGIMO, our Department of Politics and International Relations offers a Double Master's in International Security Studies  with this institution. The course provides an opportunity to deepen your knowledge of international relations and contemporary international affairs with the freedom to specialise in subjects relating to Russia. It is a full time, 24-month programme taught entirely in English and you will spend year two in Moscow. We also welcome students who have started their degree at MGIMO to the University of Reading for their second year.

Strengthening the relationship between the two universities, the University of Reading and MGIMO have launched a double degree Bachelor programme in Politics and International Relations that will span four years, with students spending the first two years at MGIMO and the final two years at Reading. Upon completion, students will be awarded two Bachelor's degrees. The inaugural cohort of students started in September 2018 at MGIMO and as of 2020, we will welcome students from MGIMO at our Department.

The partnership also offers students the opportunity to pursue a double PhD, which is typically self-funded. Students will be given the chance to defend a thesis at MGIMO and the University of Reading, and will be awarded a PhD from each institution. For further details please contact our Postgraduate Research director, Dr Rob Jubb.

Royal Military Academy Sandhurst

In partnership with the Henley Business School, the School of Politics, Economics and International Relations delivers the British Army's Higher Education Pathway. The pathway currently allows RMAS officers to achieve a formal academic qualification in Leadership and Strategic Studies at the University. Selected officer cadets entering the Commissioning Course at RMAS can pursue a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree during the early years of their career.

The course is taught face to face and online, offering digital learning access to officers spread around the UK and abroad. It is intended to equip them with skills to deal with a variety of scenarios in the field of duty.

“Both the University of Reading and RMAS have long-standing and distinctive traditions of inquiry and education. We are already bringing these traditions together in the education of army officers, and look forward to explore further areas for collaboration in education and research, and learn from each other."

NUIST-University of Reading Academy

NUIST AcademyThe University of Reading has a long-established relationship with the Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST), China's premier university in meteorology. The two institutions established the NUIST-Reading Academy  in September 2015, after receiving formal approval from the Chinese Ministry of Education.

Our department of Economics offers a joint undergraduate degree in partnership with NUIST. Students on the BSc Business Economics and Trade programme study during the first three years (Part 0 foundation, Part 1 and Part 2) at NUIST and then transfer to the University of Reading for the final year of their degree. The programme focuses on principles of economic analysis and accompanying quantitative methods, adopting a technical approach. Students taking the degree will acquire a thorough knowledge and appreciation of core economic theory and its uses and applications especially in a business and trade environment.

Successful completion of the Programme will lead to the award of degrees by both the University of Reading and NUIST. This programme is only available to students studying at the NUIST- University of Reading Academy.

More recently, summer schools for NUIST students have been established in Reading, allowing Academy students to get a taste of what it is like to live and study in the UK. The partnership has also opened up outward mobility opportunities for those at Reading, with a number of students each year taking advantage of funding to visit NUIST and experience Chinese culture first-hand.
