Early Modern Studies exhibition

Detail of an illustration from 'Les voyages de Jean Struys' (1681)From 18-20 July 2011, the Early Modern Research Centre at Reading will be hosting its annual Conference in Early Modern Studies with the theme of ‘Communication & Exchange’. The Association for Low Countries Studies (ALCS) has generously agreed to sponsor the Dutch presence at this conference, which has been growing steadily over the past few years. This year, the conference will be accompanied by an exhibition of rare books from the University of Reading’s Special Collections, in particular, the Overstone and Cole libraries, which contain a wealth of material from the Low Countries, as well as texts relating to these parts.

This exhibition will be accompanied by a featured item which will give an insight into Les voyages de Jean Struys [1681] from the Overstone Library collection, accompanied by images of this richly illustrated work.

A catalogue booklet is available to accompany the exhibition - please contact Fiona Melhuish, UMASCS Librarian, for more details.

In addition to this exhibition, printed material from the Isotype and ephemera collections from the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication will be on display in the HUMSS building during the week of the conference. The Isotype collections are especially rich in early modern material, most notably the extensive series of (continental) battle plans and (Dutch) maps and town plans.

For more information on the conference and the exhibitions, please contact Esther Mijers, Department of History, University of Reading (e.mijers@reading.ac.uk).
