Printed ephemera collections
Our collections include several made up of printed ephemera:
- Elspeth Evans Collection of printed ephemera relating to the arts in London, 1960-1999
- John Lewis Printing Collection, 20,000 items illustrating the history of printing from the 15th century to the present
- Philip Ormond Collection of advertising material for the arts in London, 1970-1999
- Porter Collection of Letterbox Ephemera, unsolicited leaflets, fliers and advertising material, 1963 to the present
- Sowerby Collection of printed stud cards and handbills, 1770-1939
- Spellman Collection of Victorian music covers
In addition, the following collections include a significant amount of printed ephemera:
- De La Rue, including proofs and artwork for stationery, playing cards and tickets
- Gibbings Collection, including items with Gibbings woodcuts
- Great Exhibition Collection, including broadsides and souvenirs of the 1851 exhibition
- Huntley and Palmers, including packaging designs and specimens
- Peek Frean, including designs and artwork for biscuit tins
- J.C. Trewin, including theatre programmes, posters and related material
These collections also support the work of the Centre for Ephemera Studies in the Department of Typography and Graphic Communication which itself has a substantial collection of printed ephemera: the Maurice Rickards Collection.
