Applying to the Silchester Field School

Current Archaeology Award nomineeThe sixteenth season of work on Insula IX at the Roman town of Silchester will take place between 2 July and 12 August 2012.

The Sichester excavation was a nominee for the Research Project of the Year category of the prestigious Current Archaeology Awards 2012.

Application process

Step 1

Before applying to the excavation, it is essential that you read thoroughly the online Application Pack and the Terms and Conditions (PDF 72KB).

It is also imperative that you fully comprehend how much your time at Silchester will cost, using our easy-to-follow Payment Guide below. If you are still unsure and need to ask some questions, please email the Field School Director Amanda Clarke. When you are 100% happy with the dates, the cost and the nature of the excavation, feel free to apply for a place online or request a postal application pack using the contact details below .

Please be aware that your application is taken as a commitment to adhere to the payment deadlines and a commitment to attend the excavation. If you simply want to register an interest in the excavation, please just email field school administration.

Step 2

There are two ways to submit an application:

  1. Complete the online Application Form (this will be available only when application open).
  2. Contact field school administration by email or post (address at the bottom of this page) and request that an application pack and form is either emailed or posted to you.

Step 3

Once you have applied, you will be informed whether or not you have been accepted onto the excavation within 14 days. From this point, you will receive information on payment and the rest of the application process.

Note: The minimum age for participating in the Field School is 16. Applications are dealt with on a first come first served basis and early application is encouraged as places on the Field School fill up very quickly.

Payment Guide

There are a number of different tariffs for the Field School.

Category Including Food & Accommodation* Training & Supervision only                   
If you have never been to the Silchester Field School before £250 per 6 day week £170 per 6 day week
If you have spent 2 weeks or more at the Silchester Field School £150 per 6 day week £70 per 6 day week
If you have spent 6 weeks or more at the Silchester Field School £80 per 6 day week £70 per 6 day week
If you have 6 months or more excavation experience at recognised excavations £80 per 6 day week £70 per 6 day week

* 'Accommodation' refers to space on the camp-site and use of all the camp-site facilities
