Soil Research Centre

The Soil Research Centre was established in 2010 as the focus for soils related research activities at the University of Reading.

Rural landscapeIn the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008), research by Centre members was once again found to be excellent. 90 % of our research was assessed as being internationally significant with 40 % assessed as internationally excellent and 5 % in the top "world leading" 4* category. It was noted that both our research income and our postgraduate numbers were higher than the national average and that almost 80 % of our "esteem indicators" were of international quality indicating our continued significant involvement with the research community, government committees, consultancy etc.

These results, together with the announcement that Reading is ranked 8th in the world (and the only UK University in the global top 20) in terms of the impact of its agricultural research globally in the latest Thomson Reuters Essential Science Indicators, shows that Soil Science research at Reading continues to thrive.

Research Focus

Our research investigates the role of soils in environmental sustainability. The work is carried out at a range of scales from molecular studies to global impact studies using satellite imagery and geographical information systems. Field research, laboratory experiments and modelling techniques are used to develop a thorough understanding of soil within the earth's systems. Our research contributes to the activities of the Earth Systems Science Research Group

Our research feeds directly into our undergraduate teaching, our two postgraduate taught programmes; MSc Soils and Environmental Pollution and MSc Environmental Management and our Postgraduate research opportunities.
