Report an issue
We have a dedicated security team who keep the campus safe for students, staff and visitors. If you feel threatened or vulnerable or wish to report something, the Security team can be found in their 24/7 control room in Whiteknights House or simply stop any member of the team out and about on the University estate.
We encourage all students to download the University of Reading SafeZone app. Have it before you need it – stay safer on campus and in the local area with SafeZone.

Report a crime
If you are the victim of a crime on campus, or witness a crime taking place then please:
- Contact Security Services immediately, using the SafeZone App or by telephoning the Security Services number.
- We will take any immediate action necessary and advise you accordingly.
- If it is a crime then we will advise you to report it by telephoning 101 or through the Thames Valley Police website.

Staying Safe on Campus
At University of Reading Security Services, we're proud to help keep our University community safe. You'll see us patrolling on foot and in vehicles, providing a reassuring presence and a friendly face.
We pride ourselves on our three A’s - always being:
- Available – Here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
- Accessible – Contact us through SafeZone, by phone, email, at our Control Room or on patrol.
- Approachable – Our friendly, highly trained team is always happy to offer help, advice or reassurance.
Our six top tips for staying safe on campus:
1. Download SafeZone
Download the free SafeZone app to contact University Security quickly, request assistance and share your location with our team when you need help. It's the easiest way to help you to stay connected and safe on campus.
2. Stay safe when moving around campus
When walking around campus, particularly after dark, try to travel with others, stick to established pathways and choose well-lit routes with CCTV coverage where possible. Stay aware of your surroundings.
3. Use our Security Chaperone Service
Feeling uncomfortable walking across campus alone? Contact Security by phone or SafeZone to request a chaperone to accompany you. If our officers are busy elsewhere, we can stay in contact with you and monitor your journey on CCTV where coverage is available.
4. Keep your bike secure
Use our secure, swipe-access cycle sheds. Visit the Security Control Room to activate your University card for access. We also sell quality D-locks, bike lights and high-visibility jackets at heavily discounted prices.
5. Prevent tailgating
Don't let strangers follow you into secure buildings or halls without using their own access card. Direct anyone needing access assistance to Security, and never put yourself at risk by challenging someone.
6. See something unusual? TELL US!
Report suspicious behaviour, unsecured buildings, damaged security equipment or anything that doesn't seem right. No concern is too small, and early reporting can prevent incidents.
