About us

The School of Arts and Communication Design is set in the parkland campus of the University of ReadingIn our School we bring distinctive strengths to the arts and humanities at Reading, contributing to these subjects' collective ranking at 87th in the world according to the Times listing. The mission of SACD could be summarized by the phrase "Create, Interpret, Conserve".

We have specialist staff in distinctive areas and we have access to world-leading resources for research and teaching. We create new knowledge about past and present human culture and expression, including knowledge arrived at through creative experimentation and performance. In our subject areas we are accustomed to adopting new technologies in learning and teaching, so that our students are equipped with skills for employment and, just as importantly, equipped with the ability to innovate creatively.

We use our expertise to shape how expert users and public audiences interpret past and present cultures in Britain and around the world. Through our research and external engagement we shape how texts and artefacts are understood by both specialists and the public. We work with collections that the University cares for and conserves, some of which are housed in our buildings. These include the world's largest and most significant Samuel Beckett archive, the newly-acquired Steve Dwoskin archive, collections of old master drawings and contemporary artworks, and typographical collections of international significance (Printed Ephemera Collection and Archive of British Publishing and Printing)
