why

Our origins

When the Association was formed in 1948, we adopted the name of one of the first great law reformers, Sir Samuel Romilly, to signify our hope for a new society founded on peace and justice. (Click here for a biographical note). We have recently changed to the present title to make our area of interest immediately clear.
who

Who are we?

Our members are a cross-section of those who work in the courts, such as magistrates, probation officers, solicitors and barristers, police, prison staff, social workers, and also those with an interest in justice from academic and research backgrounds, as well as volunteers and members of the public who wish to know more about the issues facing the courts today.
what

What do we do?

We meet six times a year, mostly to hear and to discuss with people who work in the widest range of allied jobs. One of our meetings is an Annual Supper which we try to make the highlight of the year, but it is the informal setting of Park House that allows for relaxed listening and a good exchange of views.
where

Where do we meet?

In the Reading Room of Park House in the grounds of the University of Reading. We are one of the few groups that not only crosses all the agency boundaries but also facilitates a meeting between gown and town, between academia and operation.

cost

What does it cost?

The annual membership subscription for all five meetings remains unchanged at £10.00 (£15.00 Joint Membership; guests and visitors £3.00 per meeting), and as in previous years, this includes a welcome glass of wine or fruit juice. For a copy of the membership form, click here.

The Annual Supper is separately priced, but is particularly good value as well as the opportunity to hear a top class speaker.
programme

What is the programme?

Our programme mixes local and national speakers, all of whom will challenge our thinking. Click for full details on the Programme page.
when

When do we meet?

We meet on one Monday evening a month during the Autumn and Winter. The meetings start at 7.45 pm with a glass of wine or fruit juice, and finish about 9.30 pm.

How can you get to the venue?

Park House is most easily reached via the Pepper Lane entrance to the University at Whiteknights. Turn left after passing the entry kiosk and then first right, This road bends sharp right and the second turn after the bend leads to Park House (the University Senior Common Room) where there is usually enough parking space in the evening. The Reading Room is immediately to your right as you enter the hall of the building.

The Find Us link below provides a map of the University campus.
(The SCR is building no.12 in the central area).

New members and visitors are always very welcome.
