Multidisciplinary research priorities

We are reinforcing research excellence though multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration. Major research investments include:

Walker Institute for Climate Systems Research

The inter-disciplinary Walker Institute for Climate Systems research brings together the unrivalled breadth and depth of climate expertise at Reading.

Institute for Cardiovascular & Metabolic Research

The Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Research fosters scientific interactions between research groups undertaking basic biological research and those studying impact of drugs and diet on biological systems relevant to cardiovascular and metabolic health. Research focuses on our areas of strength in platelet biology, atherogenesis, myocardial regeneration, insulin and vascular cell signalling, postprandial lipid metabolism, nutrigenetics, bioactive phytochemicals and vascular function.

Centre for Integrative Neuroscience and Neurodynamics

This centre uses interdisciplinary research to investigate the physiological and psychological mechanisms underpinning complex cognitive behaviours, targeting typical and atypical development and decline in individuals. The Centre's work includes researchers in Psychology, Pharmacy, Food Biosciences, Mathematics, Cybernetics and Clinical Language Sciences. Their work focuses on the modulation of neuronal behaviour, the influence of diet on brain psychophysiology, brain imaging, diet and cognition, neuronal network control and modelling.

Centre for Food Security

The Centre for Food Security joins together existing areas of research excellence at the University to provide a platform for real-world research around this globally important issue.

Centre for Information Design Research

This new research centre is concerned with the issues that surround the design of complex information so that it meets the needs of the people who will use it. The Centre brings together expertise in graphic design, interaction design and psychology, with input from specialist researchers in technology development, linguistics, economics and law. The Centre will be working with various organisations and institutions, as well as the people who use organisations' documents, web sites, text messages etc., in order to develop effective information design for all aspects of everyday life.

Other multidisciplinary research areas include:

Samuel Beckett

In 2008 we significantly enhanced our Samuel Beckett archive with the acquisition of the James and Elizabeth Knowlson collection. Reading now hosts the largest collection of Becket materials in the world. The archives provide a focus for cross-disciplinary work and includes researchers from English; French; Fine Art; Film, Theatre & Television; and Philosophy.
