Helping students to secure off-campus accommodation
Students can sometimes encounter challenges when securing off-campus accommodation. Many landlords, accommodation providers and letting agents in the private sector require a UK-based rent guarantor before they will agree a tenancy. A rent guarantor is someone who agrees to pay your rent in your place, should you not be able to pay at any point during your tenancy. The guarantor will typically need to be a UK resident and will need to be referenced. It’s an insurance policy for private landlords.
If you do not have anyone who can act as your guarantor in the UK, landlords and letting agents will often ask you to pay several months’ rent upfront instead; this can be anything from 6 to 12 months. This high upfront cost can be a barrier for students wishing to live off-campus in private accommodation.
Following student feedback that assistance with securing a guarantor would improve the student experience, Reading University Students’ Union (RUSU) and the University of Reading have worked together to create a university partnership with YourGuarantor. YourGuarantor act as a UK rent guarantor for students renting in the private sector. scheme is discretionary and is open to both home and overseas students (EU & Non-EU), undergraduates & postgraduates.
