The Autumn Term Programme
![]() |
PhotoSoc runs two sessions a week throughout the Autumn Term. One on a Tuesday evening for continuing photographers and one on a Wednesday evening for beginners; both sessions run from 7pm onwards in the HUMSS Building Room G74 (In the HUMSS “Tower” near Entrances 7/8). We also run a number of short photowalks throughout the term in order for members to socialise and take photographs with peers on hand to give advice and support. This year, we’re also running a residential trip in the Autumn Term in order for members to get to know each other and take photos over a weekend together away from the university. The beginners sessions are designed as an introductory course of seven meetings to provide a suitable basis for your photography to develop from. Near the end of the term we also have an one day inter-university “photo hunt” in London.
Please note: The first meeting (Tuesday, 11th October 2011 7pm) is for all members and will be in the Palmer Building Room 109 (Upstairs Lecture Theatre). |
Which Group is for Me?
For the last two years we’ve divided the society in two groups, one for beginners and one for continuing photographers (those with prior experience). We do this to allow us to create an introductory course to photography for beginners and to cater specialist sessions for those who already know the basics. The main question that arose from members joining however has been, “Which group should I be in?” and one of the major issues with this is that some people who might have taken photographs for a number of years lack technical knowledge or technique whilst being great composers and would for our purposes be a beginner, and then there are those who seem to think they don’t know a lot about photography and yet when asked they understand and they probably aren’t quite the beginners they think! So this is a non-comprehensive list of the things we’d expect people to know to join our continuing photography group:
In short we shouldn’t be having to stop mid-sentence to explain something; that said if you know quite a bit of this stuff, it might be worth coming along to both sessions for a few weeks to see which you fit into better. |

The Darkroom
![]() |
The society has its own darkroom located in TOB1 near to the Art Department. The darkroom is available for members to use 24h a day. However, in order to be allowed to use the darkroom all members must undergo a training session (this includes those with prior darkroom experience due to health and safety) and pay a £10 fee to cover chemical costs (this is payable online via the RUSU Website). Developing chemicals are provided free of charge, however, paper must be provided by members (except during your training session). Following the training session, you can collect the keys from the RUSU Hub (a £10 fully-refunded deposit is required) and use them for a maximum of three days. Use of the darkroom must be booked in advance on a first-come first-served basis. In our darkroom we can currently process:

Equipment Rental
| Not everyone can afford their own DSLR and a selection of lenses to go with it, or would want to buy a film SLR for an one-off usage. We as a society understand this, and as such offer a selection of camera equipment that members can borrow. This is based around Canon’s highly successful EOS range, we only cater for this system in order to maximise available resources from our limited budget as well as to being able to offer in depth support for the equipment we loan out as the majority of committee members are currently Canon users. This includes 3 DSLR Cameras and 2 Modern Film SLR Cameras so that members need not be daunted by old technology and can use the same system they enjoy for digital in film formats as well. Equipment can be borrowed for up to two weeks (though if you need it longer contact us and we’ll see what we can do) for a fully-returnable deposit; however, penalty charges apply for late returns, equipment damages or lenses that are returned dirty (we provide cleaning kits). Not sure what to borrow, contact us with what you intend to use it for and we can advise you. See our Canon Equipment Range. |
