Studying philosophy at the University of Reading introduces you to progressive intellectual challenges and consolidates your previous experience at each new level.
You will become informed about current debates in philosophy, be able to appreciate multiple perspectives and the values of diversity, learn about different conceptions of social and civic responsibility, and enhance your global engagement and multicultural awareness.
You will also cultivate your skills in oral and written argument, learn how to present your views in public, acquire the means to anticipate and respond to objections and challenges, and develop your ability to work in groups towards shared goals. Above all, you will gain independent learning skills, and the ability to reflect effectively on your progress and strengths and on the goals you wish to achieve.
"Philosophy begins where many end the conversation: when thoughts become hard to express, views become difficult to understand, and strong argument is needed. The subject allows one the time to think carefully about these issues. I cannot emphasise enough how much help and support I received at Reading – I do not know what I would have done without it.”
