Our MPharm is designed to produce graduates trained to the high level of professionalism needed for a career in Pharmacy, either in the community, hospital, industry or higher education. In addition our graduates acquire key transferable skills, such as team-working and problem-solving, that are highly valued by today's employers
At Reading, the course has been structured as an innovative and fully modularised programme that provides you with a broad education in pharmaceutical discovery, development and application. The four key areas which are covered throughout your time at Reading are Drug Design, Medicine Formulation, Integrated Patient Care and Therapeutics.
In the first year you will take scientific modules such as Human Physiology, Cell Physiology, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutics and Medical Microbiology as well as Pharmacy Practice modules where you will learn the essential roles and skills that professional Pharmacists need. As well as being taught Pharmacy practice, we ensure that our students spend time within a hospital or community pharmacy where you will gain a direct insight into the varied work of a professional Pharmacist.
In the second, third and fourth year you build on these skills and you will also take Therapeutics modules which will teach you about the understanding and management of human diseases. Specialisation in individual areas of interest is possible through dissertations, placements and the extended research project that is completed in the fourth year and which will be supervised by an academic expert in this field.
We enjoy close links with the Pharmacy profession at local, regional and national levels. Our students can apply for membership in the British Pharmaceutical Students Association that represents the student sector of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain. To qualify and practice as a Pharmacist, graduates must complete the MPharm degree and then 12 months pre-registration training in an approved pharmaceutical establishment. At the end of the pre-registration is an exam that allows you to register as a Pharmacist with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.
