What do pharmacists do? What careers can they follow?

How long does it take to qualify as a pharmacist?

Pharmacists must undertake a four-year MPharm degree and complete one year of pre-registration training. Once passing the RPSGB pre-registration exam, they may register as a practising pharmacist with the RPSGB.

What CPD (Continuing Professional Development) courses do we offer?

CPD is mandatory for all practising pharmacists registered with the RPSGB from 2009. You will be encouraged to record your learning in the format required by the RPSGB from the earliest possible opportunity in you undergraduate career. We also support CPD activities and personal development using iLearn.

Are there bursaries available for people wanting to study at Reading?

University Entry Scholarships of £2,000 are available for all Pharmacy students who achieve three A levels at Grade A, including Chemistry, and put Reading as 1st choice.

When can I come to see Reading?

You are very welcome to visit the Reading School of Pharmacy at the UoR Open Days, which run four times each year.

When will I have exams?

Exams normally take place in May/June of each year with resits in August/September. There may also be modules which have continuous assessments throughout the term.

How is the work divided? How is the teaching delivered?

The teaching of Pharmacy at the University of Reading is based on the practical skills you will employ as a fully-qualified healthcare professional. This knowledge is delivered using many different modes of learning, ranging from traditional lectures to practical classes, discussion groups, dispensing classes and role-play to problem-based study groups.

Do I have to prepare for the course?

There is no special preparation needed before studying Pharmacy except the usual preparations for going to University. You may, however, wish to have a look at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain website for more information about the career you are considering.
