Management strategies for Banana Streak Virus : epidemiology, vector studies
and control of banana streak virus in East Africa highland bananas.
|
Background
Banana streak virus (BSV) is a major obstacle to increasing banana
production in many regions of the tropics. In Uganda, the other
countries of East Africa where bananas are a major component of the diet,
declining yields and the abandoning of plantations by some growers are
attributed to the effect of the virus. The purpose of this project
is to gain a better understanding of the epidemiology and ecology of BSV,
and its importance and effect on banana production in Uganda |

Activities at PEL
Field experiments in Uganda to study the effect of climate on the
response of bananas to BSV; and to test whether good crop management can
alleviate the effects of the disease and restore banana yields to near
normal |
Intended outcomes from PEL
A strategy formulated for managing BSV through appropriate crop
husbandry |
