Safe Food

Aflatoxin contamination in groundnut in southern India, raising awareness and transferring and disseminating technologies to reduce aflatoxin

Background

Aflatoxin contamination (due to infection by A. flavus) is widespread throughout the groundnut-based food and feed chain in Andhra Pradesh (AP), India. Farmers and other stakeholders, including consumers, are not aware of the health risks of aflatoxin, nor of management options or technologies to reduce aflatoxin. This project will use farmer participatory approaches to test and disseminate two low-cost technologies that can reduce aflatoxin at source; aflatoxin resistant varieties and improved post-harvest processing practices.

Activities at PEL

Participatory varietal selection programe to test new aflatoxin resistant varieties conducted in three Districts in AP, India. Awareness of the health risks of aflatoxin and technologies to reduce aflatoxin promoted with NGOs

Intended outcomes from PEL

New high yielding varieties with resistance to aflatoxin tested and adopted by farmers. Awareness of aflatoxin and aflatoxin reducing technologies increased.
