Modelling

As part of PEDAL's ongoing research into modelling, members are working on efficient models for complex systems in environmental and biosciences areas, and tackling important Grand Challenges problems such as Air Pollution Modelling, Computational Biology, and Phylogenetic trees expansion.    This project is funded by NATO facilitating collaboration at European level, NERC (5 years) through "e-minerals: applications of GRID enabled science to understand the Environment from the molecular level," and direct collaboration with the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre.

Members have developed new highly convergent iterative block Monte Carlo methods for Matrix computations and validated them on various applications, including the modelling of Long Range Transport of Air Pollutants (in collaboration with the Danish Environmental Research Institute): these new algorithms have shown to improve computational efficiency considerably.

The group also has an ongoing collaboration with Oak Ridge National Lab in the area of High Availability Framework and scalable algorithms.
