"When I arrived at Reading I lacked self-confidence and wasn't sure I should even be here. However, my time as a Psychology undergraduate has been an invaluable journey of self-discovery, academic development and hands-on experience. It's been an absolute pleasure to study here, in such a supportive and engaging environment. The course is delivered excellently by dedicated and passionate lecturers, and its content is much more diverse than I'd expected after A-level! I plan to continue my education at Reading after graduating, and know that when I do leave, I'll have the skills and knowledge I need to succeed. My time at Reading has been life-changing and inspiring, and I know that I will never forget it." ..........Daniel Galbraith, Undergraduate 2011
The Town and University:
Reading is a vibrant, modern town, with a unique riverside shopping centre and a history dating back to Roman times. The town is home to the Reading festival and is a 20 minute train-ride from London (25 minutes from Oxford). The Department of Psychology is located in a custom-built new building on the University's beautiful Whiteknights campus, a few minutes walk from several halls of residence, the sports hall and the Reading University Student's Union, which is home to the University's numerous student societies.
The Department and Facilities:
The history of the department can be traced back to 1929 with the appointment of a single lecturer in Experimental Psychology. Now, over eighty years later, we have expanded to a large and friendly team of over 30 academic staff, 30 research staff, as well a large number of administrative, technical and related support staff. We are located in a purpose built research and teaching facility (completed in 2005) which includes the following:
- Individual and group testing rooms
- Tutorial and lecture based teaching facilities
- Dedicated undergraduate, MSc and PhD computing facilities
- Student common room
- Large observational laboratories for research in developmental, social and clinical work
- Specialised language, speech, vision and haptic laboratories
- Neurophysiological laboratories (EEG/ERP, psychophysiology)
- fMRI brain-scanning facilities within the Centre for Integrative Neuroscience & Neurodynamics (CINN).
We are also home to a thriving research community of over 60 research postgraduates and 30 MSc students, as well as to the internationally recognised Charlie Waller Institute (CWI), which provides post-graduate clinical training in cognitive behaviour therapy and other evidence-based therapies for mental health professionals.
