Research Activities

  • The Hugh Sinclair Nutrition Group is a vibrant internationally recognised group which explores the impact of food or individual dietary components on risk of a number of chronic diseases including coronary heart disease (CHD), type 2 diabetes, cognitive decline and cancers. Physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying the observed effects are widely investigated. A particular strength is the diverse range of facilities and investigative techniques employed, including cell and molecular methods, model system studies and human intervention trials.

The group consists of ten academic staff members, our group secretary, clinical unit manager and research nurse, and typically 10-15 Postdoctoral Fellow, 5 research assistants, 15-20 PhD students, and 3-5 visiting scientists or placement students. We have an established funding track record with a variety of sponsors including the Food Standards Agency (FSA), BBSRC, Wellcome Trust, MRC, EU and a wide range of industrial partners. Much of the research conducted is multi-disciplinary, with ongoing collaborators with a large number of national and international collaborators. Furthermore Sinclair Group members are drivers of University of Reading cross-school initiatives, including the Centre for Integrated Neurosciences and Neurodynamics (CINNS), the Centre for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Research (ICMR) and the Food Chain and Health Research Theme.
